Biographical / Historical
The City Community Committee was formed in November 1973 (see Folder 9). From the outset, the committee's chief concern was in matters of town planning - especially in the Grafton, Central City and Parnell areas. It considered the future of specific buildings and sites - the Destructor on Victoria St. West and the Old Custom House are two examples.
At its inaugural meeting, committee members resolved that they should be directly elected as individuals, rather than that some should take part in a separate ballot as representatives of particular organisations. The hope was, presumably, for a more autonomous decision and policy-making body within the community. This seems to have been the case in certain fields. Indeed, the committee's relationship with the Auckland City Council (and, in particular, the Mayor) was initially somewhat strained as a result of the committee's determination to have its own way in submissions to the Local Bills Committee (see Folder 8). Eventually, however, an amicable modus vivendi was achieved.
The committee met every four weeks on the Wednesday following each meeting of the City Council. A few special meetings were held particularly in the early stages of the development of the committee.
