Biographical / Historical

Dr Elizabeth Annie Sheppard (1908-1991) joined the staff of the Auckland University College in 1947 and retired in 1972. She taught Old and Middle English, but to quote Professor Forrest Scott in an obituary (‘In pursuit of perfection', University of Auckland News vol. 21 no.10 p.18, Nov/Dec 1991) she took the whole of English literature (to say nothing of French, Latin or Greek) for her province – confidently, and, one might almost say, tenaciously.
