Biographical / Historical
Mary Stanley(1919-1980) was a poet and teacher, she best known for her collection Starveling year (Pegasus Press, 1953). She attended to Auckland University College in 1936 (eventually graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1947) and later became a trained teacher. In January 1943 Mary Stanley married, Brian Neal, who was killed in action in Italy in July 1944 while serving with the 4th Field Regiment, New Zealand Artillery.
In 1946 she married Kendrick Smithyman, with whom she had three sons. For many years she suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, but showed a determination to rise above this condition, returning to primary school teaching and working with remedial reading cases and school music.
