George L. Broad papers.

 Collection
Identifier: MSS-Archives-A-129

Scope and Contents

George L. Broad donated his papers to the Library in 1973. They contain three sets of fair minutes, of the Auckland Fabian Club, 1929-1953, the Auckland University Labour Club, 1949-1950, and the Balmoral Branch of the New Zealand Labour Party, 1950-1956. The rest of the records in this collection are for the most part cyclostyled copies of minutes and reports that are duplicated elsewhere. The papers on young Communist activities in Russia and elsewhere may well be an exception; and the Sid Scott manuscript is, of course, an original item.

The third Fabian Club minute book (see below) contains a (loose) cyclostyled note heralding the demise of the Club in 1959, but no minutes have been pasted into the book after those of 4 August 1953. The whereabouts of fair minutes for the period 1954 to 1959 is not known. MSS & Archives A-63: Fabian Club, Auckland: 6 Records, 1933-52, should be noted at this point. It consists of a collection of monthly programmes of speakers and a letter from Dame Sybil Thorndike written during her 1933 tour of New Zealand.
