Petition signed by thirteen Maori chiefs to William IV, seeking his protection from foreign incursions, tribal enemies, and the misconduct of British subjects, Kerikeri, 5 October 1831.
Scope and Contents
The petition was instigated by Maori chiefs in the Bay of Islands after the arrival of the a French naval vessel 'La Favorite' on 3 October 1831, as they feared retribution by the French for the murder of Marion du Fresne and his crew in 1772. They acknowledged the special trade and missionary contacts with Britain, and requested that the King become a 'friend and the guardian of these islands', defending them from foreign threat, from the 'teazing of the other tribes', and from the misconduct of British subjects.
