Scope and Contents

The collection consists of eight photographs and other papers copied from a James Hardie album in the Keir Hardie/Emrys Hughes papers (National Library of Scotland) relating to his New Zealand visit, 1908: 1. Frontispiece, hand-coloured dedication signed by Thomas Hislop, chairman of the Wellington Reception Committee. 2. J.K. Hardie on arrival in Wellington. 3. J.K. Hardie in garb of Maori chief. 4. Wellington mayor Thomas Hislop and his wife. 5. Wellington mayor Thomas Hislop and his wife. 6. Citizens' Reception Committee, group photograph. 7. Executive of committee. 8. Mr and Mrs Hislop, J.K. Hardie and Edward Tregear. Also in the collection are two letters, one from Alexander Monro, secretary, Keir Hardie Reception Committee, to Mrs Hardie, 21 August 1908, and the other from Jack Griffiths, cabinet maker, Wellington, to J.K. Hardie, 12 August 1914.
