This collection contains 9 scrapbooks of Grayland’s published writings for newspapers and periodicals, and 8 typescript volumes of published and unpublished works. The 9 paginated scrapbooks contain Grayland’s published journalistic writings covering the span of his career from 1945 until 1973; the collection also holds an index to the scrapbooks.

Biography

Eugene Grayland, 1916 – 1976, was a prominent New Zealand journalist and author, who worked for a number of newspapers, such as the New Zealand Herald (1945 – 1949) the Auckland Star, as well as becoming the associate-editor of the Taranaki Daily News(1949) and the deputy chief sub-editor of the Manawatu Evening Standard (1950 – 1953). In 1954, Grayland joined the Auckland Star working as the education reporter from 1954 – 1966, later becoming the science and medical reporter. In his earlier years while at primary school he edited and printed his own weekly newspaper, and from 1941 to 1945, Grayland worked in the war history and archives section of the New Zealand Army. In 1946 he founded the Colenso Press, a private press which he worked along with his wife Valerie Merle Grayland, a mystery writer, who also wrote history books with Grayland.
