Biographical / Historical
The Auckland Typographical Union is one of the earliest unions that claim a continuing existence. It was formed in 1864, revived in 1872 and 1874, and in 1935 merged into the Auckland Printing and Related Trades’ Union.
The Auckland Bookbinders’, Paper Rulers’ and Cutters’ Union 1905-, The Auckland Letterpress Machinists’ Union 1905 – and the Auckland Lithographic Society 1908-, all merged in 1916 into the Auckland Printers' Machinists and Bookbinders' Union.
In 1920 their name was changed to Auckland Related Printing Trades (other than Typographers) Union. In 1936 this Union and the Typographical Union merged to form the Auckland Printing and Related Trades’ Union. In 1939 the union merged into the New Zealand Printing and Related Trades Union to become its Auckland Branch.
In 1948 The Auckland City Female Printing and Related Trades' Union merged with the Union. This union for women workers was formed in 1918 as The Auckland City Female Bookbinders’, Rulers and Envelope-makers’ and Printers' Feeders’ Union, in 1929 paper-bag makers also came under the Unions jurisdiction and in 1936 it changed its name to Auckland City Female Printing and Related Trades’ Union.
The National Association was formed in 1883.
A Chapel was an active association formed in all shops where 10 or more members were employed.
