Biographical / Historical
The Union was first registered as the New Zealand Harbour Board Employees’ Union in 1936. In 1985, following the Constitutional Conference of 1984, it changed its name to the New Zealand Harbours Industrial Union of Workers, or New Zealand Harbour Workers’ Union.
In October 1990 a working party representing the Harbour Workers Union, the New Zealand Seafarers’ Union and the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union engaged in talks over the formation of an amalgamated maritime workers’ union. However, the proposals did not meet with WWU membership approval and a subsequent meeting held in Wellington in January 1991 signalled the end of the WWU’s support for amalgamation. The Harbour Workers’ and the Seafarers’ unions, however, share the same offices and the same publication.
In September 1992 Auckland Branch officials of the Harbour Workers’ Union promoted a proposal under which Auckland members would resign from HWU and join the Auckland Branch of the Waterfront Workers’ Union.
