Biographical Note

Sandra Lorraine Coney (b. 22 October 1944) is a local body politician, feminist, historian and women's health campaigner. She is perhaps best known for the Metro article, 'The unfortunate experiment', which appeared in 1987 alleging that women had been experiment on, without their consent, at National Women's Hospital in Auckland. The allegations and subsequent public reaction led to the establishment of the Committee of Inquiry into Allegations Concerning the Treatment of Cervical Cancer at National Women's Hospital and into Other Related Matters (the 'Cartwright Inquiry'), which confirmed the article's allegations.

In 1984 Coney co-founded with Phillida Bunkle Women's Health Action, and was the co-founder of the feminist magazine Broadsheet. She is the author or editor of numerous books on women's history and health in New Zealand.
