National Union of Railwaymen, Otahuhu Branch records.

 Collection
Identifier: MSS-Archives-92/3

Scope and Contents

The records received from the Otahuhu Branch in this deposit date from 1932 to 1986, though minutes of meetings extend only to 1980 and are lacking between September 1964 and May 1968.

The collection includes correspondence files containing inward and outward correspondence, miscellaneous reports, leaflets, circulars etc., dating from 1938 (though mainly from 1950) to 1986. These files were arranged in the Union office, in principle, by subject and have been retained, arranged alphabetically, under the titles given them.

The correspondence files organised by subject, however, were accompanied by a quantity of material, covering the same period, but which had never been sorted systematically, though much of it was in folders, some marked Closed File. To make a logical sequence, this material has been arranged roughly chronologically in a separate sub series, with a folder or folders for each year. The subject files may be consulted first on a particular topic, but it is important to remember that the annual files may also contain items relating to that topic.

Biographical / Historical

The Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants was established in 1886, covering clerical as well as manual workers. Higher paid clerical workers left this union in 1895 to form the Railway Officers' Institute (ROI), engine-drivers and firemen in 1908 to form the Locomotive Engineers, Firemen and Cleaners' Association (EFCA), and skilled tradesmen in 1924 to form the Railway Tradesmen's Association (RTA). The ASRS persisted parallel to these breakaway unions under its original name until 1972 when it became the National Union of Railwaymen of New Zealand (from 1992 as National Union of Railway Workers of New Zealand).
