Biographical / Historical

The Centre for Continuing Education Auckland began life as the Workers’ Educational Association in 1922. From 1938-1963 it was called the Council of Adult Education, from 1964-1971 it was referred to as the Department of University Extension, and finally adopted its current name, The Centre for Continuing Education, in 1971.

For many years the Workers’ Educational Association was housed in the former Old Grammar School in Symonds Street, which was destroyed by fire in January 1949 (New Zealand Herald, 17 Jan 1949).

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The material originally at E-23 was deposited at the Library in 1975 but remained unsorted. In May 1990 an additional quantity of material (accessioned as Vault 52) was donated by George Dibley, Centre for Continuing Education, University of Auckland. This material was incorporated with the earlier deposit and the whole collection was then arranged and described.

Because of their distinctive provenance, records relating to the Cambridge Music School and Hamilton Vacation Music School were separated out and described as Cambridge Music School records, MSS & Archives 92/2.

Related Materials

These records should be consulted along with the records of the Cambridge Music School and Hamilton Vacation Music School, located at MSS & Archives 92/2, which were important activities associated with the Centre.
