The Auckland University Tramping Club (AUTC), founded in April 1932, is one of the oldest outdoor clubs at the University of Auckland. The Club has its origins in the University Field Club which was founded in 1922 by members of the Natural Sciences Departments to carry out scientific field trips rather than hiking or mountaineering. The AUTC magazine Footprints was first published 1944 and their hut, Ōngārunuku (O’nuku for short), located in the Waitakere Ranges has also been an important part of the Club since 1944. Club membership is open to University of Auckland students, staff and non-University individuals who are interested in tramping. Each year the Club organises various trips (tramps and camps) and instructional courses, including day walks in the Auckland region, longer expeditions further afield, and first aid, bush, and mountaineering courses
