Scope and Contents

Collection consists of a folder of photocopies of letters written by Charles William Egerton to his friend H.J. Allen in India who was then teaching at Presidency College, Madras. The letters contain interesting insights into university life, New Zealand social circumstances and Egerton's family life. The eleven letters date from 1894 to 1916.

Biographical / Historical

Charles William Egerton (1862-1939). Studied at Trinity College, Dublin and taught at Queen Margaret College, Glasgow before moving to New Zealand in 1894. Professor of English Language and Literature at Auckland University College from 1894 to 1933.
