Content Description

This collection consists of the Indonesia Human Rights Committee's (IHRC) minutes, financial records, a large compilation of correspondence, media releases, newsletters, and information on visiting international speakers hosted by the IHRC with relevance to human rights abuses in Indonesia, especially West Papua, Aceh and its former province of Timor-Leste (East Timor). It also includes documentaries and publications used by IHRC for its publicity and educational endeavours and photographs taken at IHRC events.

Biographical / Historical

The IHRC was an incorporated society that sought to raise public awareness in New Zealand of human rights abuses, current and historical, committed by the Indonesian government. It was active between 2000 and 2012. Several of its members were also involved in the East Timor Independence Committee, which went into abeyance once East Timor (Timor-Leste) was relinquished by Indonesia in October 1999 into United Nations protection, finally gaining full independence in May 2002.

This collection combines three separate donations, the final of which was offered to Special Collections in the knowledge that the organisation had ceased its operations. Within the collection, there are a few legacy files from the final years of the East Timor Independence Committee's activities.
