Biographical / Historical

The Council was formed in November 1948 as the New Zealand Peace and Anti- Conscription Federation with the aim of arousing the people to struggle for peace and particularly against the threat of nuclear war. In May 1950 the organisation changed its name to the New Zealand Peace Council in line with the World Council of Peace. In 1965 the stated aims of the Council were:- The abolition of nuclear weapons; the right of countries to conduct their own affairs; an end to the was in Vietnam ...; an independent foreign policy for NZ. The Council remained in existence unit 1971. Both Professor Willis Airey and the Rev Dean Chandler were associated with the organisation.
