Scope and Contents

Copy of William Fox's Journal of an Expedition to Wiararapa (sic).

William Fox, later Sir William, arrived in Wellington in 1842, and in the autumn of the following year, as an agent of the New Zealand Company, went inland from the Hutt River looking for land suitable for settlement. He had three companions, Charles Clifford, William Vavasour and a Mr Whitehead. The journey was difficult but all were impressed with the potentiality of the Wairarapa valley.
