Biographical / Historical

John Alldis (1877-1968) was born in Surrey, England. He served in the Royal Marine Light Infantry from 1896-1919. During his 23 years of naval service Alldis served on multiple vessels operating primarily in the Pacific. In 1905 Alldis, serving as Captain's Servant on H.M.S Pegasus, took part in Anglo-French punitive expeditions to Malekula, New Hebrides. These actions were a direct response to local uprisings against colonial setters. Alldis took part in actions against several villages including those at Dyp Point and Hog Harbour. These expeditions involved the destruction of village houses and yam gardens. Alldis recorded his involvement in these events in his diary. In 1920 Alldis married Alice Dunage (1886-1977) they had one child, Dorothy Alldis (1921-2013).
