Biographical / Historical

Dr Sydney Rae West (known as Rae West) was born at Waiuku on 11 December 1925. West attended Mount Albert Grammar School as a boarder from 1939 to 1942, then studied medicine at Otago Medical School, graduating in 1948. After graduation he worked at Christchurch and Masterton Hospitals before returning to Waiuku to run a family medical practice from 1951 to 1971. West is credited by his colleagues for pioneering the coordination of health-related services in the Waiuku area into an embryonic health centre without walls. He also supervised many final-year medical students during their 4-6 weeks of apprenticeship at his Waiuku practice.

West obtained a Nuffield Travelling Fellowship in 1971 allowing him to travel to Europe, North America and Australia for three months to study developments in continuing medical education for general practitioners. Upon his return to New Zealand in 1972 he was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Preventative and Social Medicine at Otago University Medical School. In 1977 West was obtained an Associate Professor position in the Department of General Practice at Auckland Medical School, a post he held until 1991. West was one of the founders of the College of General Practitioners, later the Royal College (RNZCGP). He served six years as the College representative on the Medical Education Committee of the New Zealand Medical Council and was founding editor of the New Zealand Family Physician journal. His research interests included medical education and assessment, general practice organisation, and epidemiology (leading to pioneering work on hearing loss in babies). In addition to his extensive medical research publications and drawing from his knowledge of native trees, West wrote A guide to trees, published by A.H Reed in 1961. West died on 25 April 2015.
