Biographical / Historical
The Mt Albert electorate has been held by the New Zealand Labour Party since its creation in 1946. Its MPs include Warren Freer, former Prime Minister Helen Clark, and David Shearer. The core of the electorate includes the Auckland suburbs of Mt Albert, St Lukes, Morningside, Kingsland, and parts of Sandringham. Between 1996 and 1999 the electorate was known as Owairaka.
The Mt Albert Labour Electorate Committee (LEC) is the governing body of the New Zealand Labour Party within the electorate and is made up of representatives from electorates' Labour Party branches and resident members of affiliated organisations. One of the main responsibilities of the LEC is the selection of Labour candidates for local and parliamentary elections and organising the candidates' election campaigns, including fundraising, publicity, and canvassing.
