Auckland Provincial Employers Association records.
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of an almost complete run of account books and rolls of members 1901-1951; one dispute file; bound volumes of Arbitration Court submissions and of Ruling Rate surveys; rules and membership records; correspondence about industrial legislation, and minutes of Council meetings 1970- 1974.
The minutes of the Executive and other Committee minutes from 1907 onwards and some disputes files were withdrawn from the collection by the Secretary of the Association in May 1984,as the files had not been cleared for public access. The items withdrawn are marked on the first draft of this Inventory which is filed in the Appendices (see Series . The only minutes of the Association currently in the collection are those of the Council dating from 1970-74.
As part of the arrangement and description work on this collection early files and bound volumes that pre-dated the Association's current filing code were re-numbered by the archivist to accord with the filing system in operation in December 1984 (see 4-64). The collection comprises 2.4 metres of material, including 13 bound volumes, and represents 66 of the 1600 titles listed in the 4-64 Records System of the Association.

Biographical / Historical
The Auckland Provincial Employers Association was founded in 1901 for the purpose of protecting the interests of its members in trade and industrial matters following the passing of the Industrial Conciliation Act of 1894 and the requirement to have management unions represented before the Arbitration Court.
The Association was a regional division of the New Zealand Employers' Association which merged with the New Zealand Manufacturers Federation in 2001 to become Business New Zealand. Until 1956 the Association provided secretarial services for a large number of trade associations and management unions within its district as well as representing them in negotiations with employees' unions. After 1956 the Association tended to deal with industrial matters alone leaving trade matters to other specialised associations. This change in function is represented in the archives which include minutes and other records 1927-1946 of a number of affiliated employers' associations as well as those of the engineering trades 1929-1973 under various names.
