1.a - New Zealand Communist Party, Harold Silverstone resignation., 1957 - 1958
Scope and Contents
The items in this series form a distinct set of CPNZ related papers, which were possibly arranged and numbered MACK 1a to MACK 1n by McAra himself. MACK appears to be an acronym but for what is unclear. The folders contain material relating to key aspects of the Party’s history including expulsions and resignations of members during the late 1950s and early 1960s due to ideological differences and the USSR’s actions in Hungary.
Similar MACK files can be found in MSS & Archives A-9 and originally formed the bulk of that collection. The material in MSS & Archives A-9 was received by the University from McAra wrapped in thirteen packages. The folders in the first package had no numbers while the folders in the remainder of the packages were numbered consecutively starting with 2.a. The folders in the first package were, therefore, assigned numbers 1.a, 1.b to match the rest of the material. These however, are the missing
run of numbered files.
