Identifier: MSS. Archives. 2021/11. Item 5/7
Missal leaf, 15th Century

Scope and Contents

Ruled in brown/black, written in Latin with dark brown, blue and red ink in gothic script on animal vellum. Contains 10 lines of text and ten lines of notation. It is possible the leaf comes from a monastery in Poissy-St Louis, France.

Text begins with the Preface of the Roman Canon for a votive Mass of the Virgin Mary (Rubric: In commemoracione beatae marie virginis).

The text reads: "Et te ideo cum angelis et archaneglis eterne deus, et te in veneracione beate marie semper virginis exultantibus animis laudare benedicere et predicare. Que et unigenitum tuum sancti spiritus obumbracione concepit et virginitatis gloria permanente huic mundo lumen eternum effudit ihesum xristum dominum nostrum. Per quem maiestatem tuam laudant angeli adorant dominaciones tremunt potestates. Celi celorumque virtutes ac beata seraphin".

The prayer contains the formula "laudare, benedicere et praedicare" which was a motto of the Dominican order. The Dominicans had their own unique version of the missal, suggesting this may be Dominican in origin.
