Book of Hours illuminated manuscript leaf. NE Italy., 1475

Scope and Contents
Original leaf from a medieval manuscript Book of Hours. 11 lines of text, ruled in brown/black, written in Latin with dark brown ink in gothic script on animal vellum, from Bologna or possibly Ferrara.
Text begins with an antiphon; a short chant in Christian ritual, sung as a refrain. The texts of antiphons are usually Old Testament Psalms. Text reads "Ne timeas, Maria. Invenisti gratiam apud Dominum. Concipies et paries filium. Alleluia". This is a paraphrase of the angelic salutation in the Gospel of Luke. "Fear not, Mary, for you have found favour with the Lord, behold, you shall conceive and bring forth a son, and he shall be called the Son of the Most High".
Following the antiphon is a segment from Psalm 122:1 "Laetatus sum..." (I was glad).
