Scope and Contents

Part I. Traditions of the Thames Valley tribes. Chapters 1 and 2. Tainui and Arawa. Tainui whakapapa ex Hoturoa; account of canoe voyage and settlement, from published sources (eg John White). Arawa canoe and Tama-te-kapua whakapapa; son Kahu-mata-momoe and naming of Mt Te Aroha, and names of Coromandel ranges. Movement of crews over land and naming in area Tainui to Kawhia. Early tribes in Thames Valley: Ngati Kahupungapunga and Te Upoko-toea.

Chapter 3. Ngati Tara. Re Ngati Raukawa and Tara. Battles, Waihou district and tribes. War against Ngati Hako and Ngati Marama, names of places. More attacks on Tara and division of land spoils amongst groups.

Chapter 4. Hotunui and Maru in Hauraki. Ngati Maru take Uri-o-Pou. Hotunui and tribe take over area. Whakapapa.

Chapter 5. Ngati Maru in Thames Valley. Kaureremoa, ancestors of Ngati Paoa, search for Takakopiri and marriage. Ngati Huarere at Cape Colville Peninsula.

Chapter 6. Ngati Hako and Ngati Huarere. Murder of Kairangatira of Ngati Maru, revenge and subjection. Murder of Taurukapakapa: various fights with Marutuahu who became dominant in Cape Colville and Hauraki. Subjection and migration of Ngati Huarere. Ngapuhi attack on Hauraki tribes ca 1790. Ngapuhi and Ngati Whatua attack Ngati Paoa who were defeated at Takapuna. Ngati Paoa and Ngati Maru sworn to revenge.
