Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The papers include personal material, business records, 'Here and Now' file, manuscripts offered to Lowry for publication, and samples of work from most of his presses, together with autobiographical material.

It is worth noting that the programmes for concerts and plays arranged chronologically in Section A, have detailed descriptions only until 1948. Due to the large number of programmes dating from after 1948 it was necessary to provide only a brief description e.g. Programmes 1949, 3 items, for each folder.

The following printing terms as defined in the Oxford English Dictionary have been used to describe material in this collection:

Broadsheet: a piece of paper printed on one side only, usually large.

Dodger: a small circular or hand bill.

Leaf: One of the folds of a folded sheet of paper.

Prospectus: A description of the chief features of a forthcoming work, circulated for the purpose of obtaining support or subscriptions.
