Scope and Contents

From the Series:

The series is composed of pictorial matter accumulated by Sir George during the latter part of his life, the bulk of which he arranged in seven guard books; one of photographs, three of illustrations from weekly papers and three of cartoons from the same source. Four of the bound volumes had been given to the University by Sir George during his lifetime, and were accessioned as part of the general collection of the Library until they were incorporated with the rest of the Papers in 1962. These volumes may be dentified by the call sign shown in square brackets after the description of the item. In addition to the volumes there are two loose photographs, a drawing of his bookplate and two caricatures. The material in the series consists therefore of photographs; photogravure and line reproductions (usually with letterpress captions) from illustrated papers in New Zealand and Britain; and original drawings. The chronological arrangement used in the rest of the collection has been modified in this series in order to keep the two sets of bound volumes in serial order, the other items being listed first. However the arrangement is chronological within the three sub-divisions of the series. The photograph album contains samples of Sir George's own photographs which are easily distinguished from those obtained from professional sources. A number of the latter are prints of the photogravure reproductions in the bound volumes, which have more detailed captions than are given in the album. A number of photographs have been pasted into the album by the archivist and their titles have been added to the existing inventory, which is housed in a pocket at the front of the volume. The material in this series provides a pictorial record that supplements the documentary material of the rest of the collection. It contains pictures of Sir George's birthplace, his school, the houses in which he lived, his family, his business premises, of parliamentary occasions and associates, of the Ministry, and of the passing parade of events of his times.
