South Africa Visit
, 1910-11, invitation cards, railway passes, menus, passenger list and souvenir booklets, 1"., 1910 - 1911
Scope and Contents
In this group are found souvenirs and mementoes of a large range of activities, associations and occasions. The physical types include membership, programme, visiting, invitation, greeting, and memorial cards; larger printed programmes; Christmas cards; souvenir and memorial booklets; table plans for dinners; railway passes and phrenological charts. Record items 8 and 9 relate to the specific occassions of two overseas visits by Sir George. The rest of the mementoes have been arranged in groups according to their form or nature. The record items are listed in chronological order by year of the first item in each wallet. There is little arrangement within the wallets. The individual items refer to a considerable range of activities. Fowlds's membership of various clubs and organisations may be documented here, as well as his presence aat functions, and the details of ships in which he sailed. The series is notable for its indication of the artistic taste and social customs of the time; for its revelation of character, as for example in the case of Seddon's Christmas cards; and for its evidence of the excistence of now defunct societies.
