Scope and Contents

From the Series:

Publications by writers other than Fowlds make up this series. It includes the items he accumulated that are about himself, have some connection with his early life, or are about his activities. Works that do not come into any of these categories have been transferred to the main collection of the Library. The catechisms are mementoes of his father and the Rev. W. Orr. The Dutch grammar is evidence of his attempt to learn the language when he lived in South Africa. The diary contains notes that he made on the visit to the Pacific Islands which is described in 'The Cruise of the "Mapourika"' (8/3). The rest of the record items contain material about his political and other activities. The physical types represented include printed books, booklets, pamphlets, leaflets, broadsheets, periodicals, and a bound volume. The latter is a memento of his friend and correspondent, Sir John Gorst, who revisited New Zealand and toured the Waikato with Fowlds in 1906. Pamphlets, booklets, and leaflets of a similar nature to those in record items 3 and 4 will be found in various places in the Public Life Files, and parallel material, such as membership cards of political organisations, is located in Series 1.
