Scope and Contents

From the Series:

This series contains an extensive collection of handwritten and typescript notes and drafts of speeches, sermons, addresses, articles, and reminiscences that Sir George produced in the course of a long public life. The material ranges from his first literary efforts in Scotland and South Africa to the work of the accomplished speaker, debater, and publicist of later years. It also includes a number of works that appear to be by other writers. The physical types include speech notes (brief pencilled headings on narrow slips of paper); handwritten and typewritten drafts; the original articles and the revised text for the work that was first referred to as the Matthew Fowlds Memorial Volume and published as Matthew Fowlds, Centenarian Weaver, 1806-1907, and Other Fenwick Worthies; and the original manuscript and the typescript of Sir George's South African Reminiscences, which was not published. Literary rights to this and other unpublished works are the property of the legal heirs.

Except for record items 7, 8, and 9, the material in the series has been sorted and arranged by the archivist. It is possible that many of the speeches and articles may be found in their published form amongst the newspaper clippings in Series 3, for example in the bound volume Speeches, or amongst the printed works in Series 8. The importance of the series lies not only in the fact that it reveals Sir George's ideas upon a wide variety of topics, social, economic, political and religious, but also because it gives a clear indication of the temper of his mind. In addition, it demonstrates the methods he used to work up his material; his ability to speak form the briefest of notes; and the proressive development over a long period of his command of language and his capacity to marshal an impressive array of facts and figures.
