Includes inwards and outwards correspondence (Mr Clover and others) and newspaper clippings. Part 1., n.d.
Scope and Contents
These papers were given to the Library in 1973/4 by Mr Gary Clover who was involved in anti-apartheid activities in Auckland between 1968 to 1974. These years saw protests in New Zealand against contact with South Africa in various sports, culminating in the banning of a Springbok rugby tour by the Labour Government under Norman Kirk in 1973. The papers are not the official records of the organisations represented, rather they are the personal collections of a committed activist who served at different times and in different capacities with CARE, HART and the Apartheid Information Service.
The newspaper clipping collections are extensive. They provide a detailed coverage of events connected with race relations in South Africa, but also in other parts of Africa (Uganda, Rhodesia, etc); and of New Zealand's (and Australia's) own racial problems.
On donating the papers Mr Clover set aside certain items which he did not wish to be consulted until 1994. These have been retained in Box 6 at the end of the collection.
