Appendix / He Korero mo Tuteurutira Raua Ko Hinerongo
. Extract from whakapapa book of Hoani Pitini-Morera. Includes translation, annotations, and sources., ca 1988
Scope and Contents
Typescript transcriptions from a manuscript account of Ngati Kuri tribal history written by Hariata Whakatau Pitini-Morera in 1930.
The text, almost all in Maori language, is arranged in four sections, each of which provides accounts of warfare and peace as experienced by the tribal group, Ngati Tuhaitara after their migration to Te Waipounamu from the North Island.
Section one, unnumbered, outlines battles and other activities in several South Island locations; section two (Upoko 2) covers marriage, other tribal groups and further warfare; section three (Upoko 3) is dated 1890 and is introduced as the beginning of the great battles between Ngati Tuahuriri and Ngati Mamoe; section four is dated 23 March 1891 and describes the activities of Ngati Tuahuriri at Kaiapoi, and of other tribal groups.
This manuscript provides insights into South Island Maori history and is of literary interest as an example of Maori narrative style in the early 1900s.
