Scope and Contents
The papers in this collection include letters, press releases, copies of newspaper clippings, notes, etc. covering the period of Malcolm Douglas's candidacy for the seat of Hunua in 1978, his six months as MP, during which the Election Petition was presented, his loss to Winston Peters in 1979, and the Court of Appeal hearing of 1980 relating to the judgment in the Electoral Court. They have been left in the order in which they were received, except that a set of 'Notes of Evidence' from the Electoral Court hearing, identical with those in MSS & Archives 94/7, has not been retained.
Papers in MSS & Archives 94/7 New Zealand Labour Party Hunua Electorate Records 1978-1979, should be consulted with the collection here described.
An exchange of letters between Malcolm Douglas and Winston Peters, dating from before the 1978 Election and relating to Labour policy on overstayers, was received in 1998 and added to Item 1.
