This subseries covers a significant period in Clay's professional and personal life: the Reading Recovery programme was officially launched in 1976 and in 1977 Clay resigned from her role at the University of Auckland in order to spend more time researching and developing the programme. Folder 1/4/3 contains Clay's letter of resignation and the University of Auckland Council's response.

Clay also travelled extensively during these years, visiting the USA, Australia, the UK, Greece and Italy. Folder 1/4/3 contains one of her much used passports. In 1980 Clay was invited to attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace in honour of the Queen Mother’s 80th birthday, folder 1/4/7 includes her invitation to and account of the event.
