Reflections on 90 years: some highlights
- drafts and final version. , 2003 - 2004
Scope and Contents
This series contains drafts and papers related to Cumberland's autobiography Milestones and landmarks : from Bradford, England, 1913, to Awhitu, Aotearoa, 2006, Waiuku : G. and T. Cumberland, 2011.
The process of writing this autobiography was lengthy, beginning not long after Cumberland retired when he set out to write a detailed chronological account of his life. The project remained incomplete until 2004 when Cumberland moved to live with his daughter Tanya and her partner Charmaine Pountney. With their assistance and help from his son Garth, Cumberland completed writing the book in 2006 but it remained unpublished until late 2010 when his daughter Tanya decided to have the book published as a surprise Christmas gift for her father.
In addition to the papers found here much of the material in this collection shows evidence of being utilised by Cumberland for this publication, with notes such as 'for future auto' added to file covers.
