Manukau City - Mayoral campaign correspondence and related papers. (Folder 1 of 2), 1983 - 1983
Scope and Contents
The papers in this series relate to Cumberland's time in public office between 1953 and 1962. During this period he undertook the following roles:
Member of the Auckland City Council (1953-1962)
Chairman, A.C.C Town Planning Committee (1953-1956)
Member, Auckland Metropolitan Drainage Board (1953-1962)
Member, Auckland Regional Authority (1953-1962)
Chairman Auckland Regional Planning Authority (1956-1959)
During his time on the city council Cumberland played an integral part in the fight against the planned Brown's Island sewerage outlet and building of the Manukau sewerage treatment plant. Cumberland also had strong views on the need for a master transport plan for Auckland which included the electrification and undergrounding of Auckland's railway system in conjunction with the plan for an extensive motorway system.
In 1957 Cumberland applied to the College Council for permission to stand for Mayor of Auckland while retaining his position as Professor. The Council denied him permission concluding that "it was not possible for a Professor to hold the position of Mayor of Auckland without prejudice to his duties to the college" Some material relating to this issue can be found in item 4/1.
In 1983 after his retirement from the University, Cumberland stood for Mayor of Manukau City. The papers in this series relate primarily to this unsuccessful campaign.
Other items relating to Cumberland's public service activities, including photographs, published material, clippings and framed realia can be found in Series 12, 13, 14 and 15 of this collection.
