Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The papers in this collection relate to Norman Douglas' secretaryship of the Northern Rubber Workers’ Union, 1958-1962, and of the Auckland District Woollen Mills, Knitting Mills and Hosiery Factories Employees’ Industrial Union of Workers, 1959-1961.

A set of subject files was found among the papers, which had been thought to relate only to unions and to the Parliamentary Committees of which Norman Douglas was Chairman. The files cover the span of his years as an MP. They have been retained as found.

When Labour became the Government in 1972, Norman Douglas failed to gain a place in Cabinet. He was, however, Chairman of various Parliamentary Select Committees. Papers here are from the Select Committee on Women’s Rights 1974-1975, and the Select Committee on Labour 1972-1975. Douglas was also Chairman of the (Labour) Caucus Committee on Labour and Immigration and the collection includes papers relating to that committee from 1970-1975.
