The pōhua tau begins: "Kimihia Rangahaua kei hea koe | Ka ngaro nei, aua, a tēnā ka riro kei Paerau"

Biographical / Historical

The singer states the Wairaka in the whakārara pā is Wairaka who came to Whakatane on the Matātua waka. She made an assignation, by the appointment was kept by a different boy who Wairaka marked by scratching after they had slept together. The next day she told her father he would know who had slept with her by the mark on him. So teh father lined up the boys for inspection and found the scratch mark on the wrong boy.

According to the singer the song is by Hurinui Āpanui.
