Biographical / Historical
Hamu Katene said the 'Puna' mentioned in the waiata is Puna-oringi where Takarangi (Te Atiawa) obtained water for Raumahora (Ngāti Māhanga). Puna-oringi is just below the pā at Whakarewa where Takarangi and Raumahora later lived. Paenoa is a fishing reef off Puniho. Hurungarangi composed the song for Te Herepounamu who went ot sea to fish at Paenoa reef. The navigator of his canoe was Te Awhe.
