Biographical / Historical

This song celebrating the coming of Christianity was first recorded in a manuscript written by Te Rangikaheke in 1849. According to one account, it was composed by Enoka of Ngāti Uenukukopako for his daughter, who had died half-way across Lake Rotorua while on her way from Mokoia Island to meet the first white minister to come to Rotorua.
