Biographical / Historical

According to the performer , this waiata was composed as a lament by Wī Tariana | Ngāti Pikiao for Uru-o-te-whetū | Ngāti Pikiao, who cam from Tapuaeharuru to Puremu to fish for crayfish. When he hauled in his net it was so full of crayfish that he had difficulty in hauling it in, and accidentally fell overboard into his net and was drowned. A variant recording at McL 922 attributes the composition to Puhi for Peretini.
