Biographical / Historical
According to the performer this waiata is by an old laty of Ngāi-te-rangi for Hikairo | Ngāti Rangi-wewehi. Mitchell says the composer was Te Patuwai. Kino Hughes says it is by a woman whose young sister died at Motiti by whose body was not returned home.
