Biographical / Historical
This waiata was sung in the court during the hearing of the famous 90 Mile Beach case in 1957 when the Māori of the far north claimed ownership of that beach. In a back-announcement the performer says this lament was composed by Tohe for his daughter, when he arrive in Ahipara and looked back at the way he had come. When the singer sang it in Court it was the reason the Government lost its claim for the shellfish, the toheroa.
