Biographical / Historical

The composer was the grandmother of the performer. This lament was composed for Ihaia and Watene, both of whom were ancestors fo the singer. When Ihaia was taken to the place of burial, Watene was one fo the pall-bearers. After the burial he died suddenly on the spot.
