Biographical / Historical
The composer's son Mānuera (who was studying for the priesthood) went to Napier where he became ill. As there were no other means of conveyance Takuira went from Te Hurori to Napier on horesback to fetch his son home. He carried him on horseback as far as Rangitaiki and as his son was too ill to go further in this way, carried him from there to Te Hurori on his own back. The son finally died at Pukawa where his father composed the song after spending three days embalming his son's body.
