Biographical / Historical
Arapeta Awatere explains that Wharerangi was killed at his pā at MotupuhiRotoaira, in the attach by Ngāti Mau. During the battle he jumped a cliff into Lake Rotoaira, swimming to the mainland. Recognised by his huia head-adormnent, Ngāti Maru in a canoe chased, caught him by the hair, dragged him to the side of the canoe, struck and killed him. Poutaka married Te Whetu; their daughter Kuikui married Matuāhu, son of Wharerangi. The lament refers to the mana of Wharerangi, to the treachery of Te Huiatahi, to the vengeance by "Huruao", to the fame in battles against the East.
