Biographical / Historical
The performer states that Meri Ngaroto, the queen of Te Aupouri, who married Puhipi, the King of Te Rarawa, discovered that there was a plot by Te Rarawa to kill Te Aupouri at a feast to which they had invited Te Aupouri at Paripari. Meri called out: "Remove the heart of the flax | Where shall teh bell-bird go? Sir! | You ask of me what is suberb! | I must reply, a human! A human! A human!". Thus the murderous thoughts of Te Rarawa were not carried out.
