Biographical / Historical

The performer states that the waiata was composed as a lament because the composer's people were being balloted to fight during the first World War and as an explanation for their pacifism. The song explains that when Tāwhaio gave in at Pirongia and peace was declared between the government and Waikato, the Kingitanga peoples made a vow that henceforth they were finished with war forever.
