Biographical / Historical
This song is an adaption fo the Ngā Moteatea text by Major Kemp of Tūhourangi who, in common with the original composer, suffered frm asthma. The singer's mother, Rereamaki, was named from the second line of the song. Five other women are also named form teh song or the adaptation. They were Timu (line 1) together with Kohakore, Rereawaho, Kimioranga and Rimupae (all named in the last verse). Major Kemp (Te Rangihiwinui Kepa) was prominent during the Māori Wars of 1964-69. he died in 1898.
