Biographical / Historical
According to Potete White this waiata is a lament for followers of Te Whiti who were wrongfully imprisoned in the 1890s. It is stated by him to be a group composition by Te Atiawa. Ngāti Watson (McL 484) says it was composed by Teiki Wikarewa | Pukutapu to lament his inability because of old age and sickness to visit Parehaka. Matatu was the name of his house at Kaipakopako (New Plymouth). The performer learned the waiata from the composer. According to Hawea Whakaneke the song has been performed as a poi.
